Intercultural Evening

On January 31st, serving Tsingtao and rice wine, Xiaole Zhang and Seokhee Lee talked about their childhood and youth in China and South Korea. They introduced us to Chinese and Korean movie stars, directors and writers. We have discussed how the great narratives in a culture create a sense of community and that you always feel a bit strange, if you do not know these stories. How different German, Chinese and Korean are, was shown in the “translation” of our names. Six different ways to transcribe the syllable “an”? No problem for the Chinese language! The Korean alphabet offers 10 characters for vowels – waow!
