Café-Lingua auf dem Folkwang Campus

On June 24th, the Café-Lingua organized by the Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg visited the Folkwang campus for the second time during this summer term. The Buddies act as language guides and participate as well. In hot weather, participants used the coolness of the courtyard behind the winter garden to play language games or simply talk to each other in many languages.

Buddy Workshop Day 1

On May 13, the buddies of the next winter semester met for the first workshop day to prepare for their duties as buddies. Part of the agend was a first approach to “diversity”. It was discussed with which affiliations each individual identifies and how he or she prefers to describe him- or herself. Another topic was where in everyday life discrimination becomes visible. In addition, counseling offers at Folkwang have been scrutinized and three teams played against each other wrapping up an egg and preparing it for a fall out of a first-floor window – without breaking.

Intercultural Evening

On January 31st, serving Tsingtao and rice wine, Xiaole Zhang and Seokhee Lee talked about their childhood and youth in China and South Korea. They introduced us to Chinese and Korean movie stars, directors and writers. We have discussed how the great narratives in a culture create a sense of community and that you always feel a bit strange, if you do not know these stories. How different German, Chinese and Korean are, was shown in the “translation” of our names. Six different ways to transcribe the syllable “an”? No problem for the Chinese language! The Korean alphabet offers 10 characters for vowels – waow!
